Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House Covid-19 Statement

During these times of great uncertainty the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House continues to be a place of support and resource for the local community.

The COVID-19 physical distancing orders have disrupted our regular programming but we are fortunate to be able to continue serving our neighbours with food, hygiene and referral services while we collaborate with other DTES organizations to help ensure people can remain as safe and healthy as possible throughout this crisis.

To-go Meal Service

Our COVID-19 Emergency programming includes to-go meal service from the neighbourhood house door, as well as distribution of prepared meals to the homeless and underhoused so that access to tasty and nutritionally dense food can continue.

We are also providing sanitization and hygiene products to mitigate the spread of the virus between people and within spaces.

Grocery Hampers

Families, seniors and individuals sheltering in SROs are receiving hampers full of fresh fruits and vegetables, hygiene and cleaning products, and food staples to enable people to isolate and reduce their need to circulate in order to procure the essentials. Hampers for families include booklets and resources to engage children in learning activities.

Over the long-term, these initiatives are intended to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside by providing safe access to essential food and sanitation supplies while supporting the coordinated lresponse to the pandemic.

The Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House is working hard to support the community during this difficult COVID-19 pandemic time. Please donate to our Covid-19 Fundraising Campaign.

Mother’s Day Campaign

Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House
Mother’s Day E-card Donations

Let’s make mother’s day more meaningful to those around us! This Mothers’ Day, the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House is honouring and recognizing ALL mothers (especially those who have lived and/or are still living in the DTES). We are aware that many low income families and single parent families face extenuating challenges in our community. Many of these families live in poverty and face trauma of losing female relatives.

In this time of need, the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House is seeking YOUR help with the funding of our food security programs. We encourage you and your loved ones to make a donation in honour of your mother to help us support the many mothers and families who are struggling with food security in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. This event will allow donors to customize a charitable gift eCard for their mothers and make a donation on behalf of them!

The Right to Food is at the heart of our organization’s work and our programs aim to reform the nutritional impact, quality, abundance and delivery of food in the Downtown Eastside. Our goal is to animate a space that our neighbors can recognize as their own. Our weekly food security programs foster love, hope and inclusivity as well as offer nutritional education for participants.

Did you know that the food we purchase can create over 500 meals per week? This includes food items including: 25 litres of fresh milk; 45 pounds of rolled oats and other whole grains; 75 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables from local suppliers; 15 pounds of dried raisins, figs and dates. Each month, our nutritional outreach programs distribute 560 pounds of bananas for Banana Beat, and 60 pounds of frozen fruit (in the form of delicious fruit smoothies) to the community.

Here is a breakdown of what your donations will be allocated towards:

25 CAD – distribution of 107 bananas

50 CAD – distribution of 25 nutritious meals

150 CAD – supports our food purchases for our 500 weekly meals
