The Beat Goes On

One Wednesday – March 26  the DTES Neighbourhood House hits the streets to offer a banana to people lining up for income assistance cheques. We call this the Banana Beat.

Many people won’t have eaten much for days.

Many people will have been in line for some time.

Last year we distributed two tons of bananas.

We need volunteers for this program and our Mobile Oats Program – Tuesday March 25.

Volunteers

Our next volunteer training and orientation is on THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2017 from 12:00 – 3:00.  snacks provided.  Please rsvp with Rasheed at  volunteer@dtesnhouse.ca

Shout out for volunteers interested in helping with the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House’s family drop in program, which runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.

We invite local families to come spend time with us after school – we provide snacks, arts and crafts, guest speakers and end the evening by cooking and sharing a nutritious family meal together. The ages of kids present range anywhere from 2 months to 14 years old. It’s a great mix of people and a fun atmosphere.

We are hoping to find some volunteers that can help us out one shift a week (or whenever possible!) Your duties may include helping to set up the day’s activities, interacting and engaging with the families who attend, cooking meals, and clean up. Please contact Odo at odo@dtesnhouse.ca if interested.

Volunteers are also needed for the following programs:

Tuesday Night Prep Group: Every Tuesday night from 6:45 – 9:00 p.m. Cooking and prepping food for Wednesday Community Drop-In, cleaning up and leaving House the way you found it.

Mobile Smoothie: Once/month on the Tuesday before Income Assistance cheque issue day. Volunteers meet at the House, form teams, load carts with smoothie kits and go to specific downtown east side locations to make and serve smoothies from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a lunch break in between.

Banana Beat: Once/month on income assistance cheque issue day. Volunteers go in two teams and pass out bananas to residents of the downtown east side from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

On Call: Occasionally we don’t have enough volunteers for our programs and request last minute assistance. If you would like to be/willing to be contacted on short notice to help out please let us know and we will add your name to our volunteer list.

Donation Pick up driver: Once per month on the Tuesday before cheque issue day, we require someone (or team of people) to pick up 14 pre-paid cases of bananas from Whole Foods on Cambie and 8th and deliver them to the Neighbourhood House.
